Stream Code: - The Sunday Service

HYMN:   479               Shine Jesus Shine

Lord, the light of your love is shining,

In the midst of the darkness, shining;

Jesus, Light of the world, shine upon us,

Set us free by the truth You now bring us,

Shine on me, shine on me.

Shine, Jesus, shine,

Fill this land with the Father’s glory;

Blaze, Spirit, blaze,

Set our hearts on fire.

Flow, river, flow,

Flood the nations with grace and mercy;

Send forth Your word,

Lord, and let there be light.

Lord, I come to Your awesome presence,

From the shadows into Your radiance;

By the blood I may enter Your brightness,

Search me, try me, consume all my darkness.

Shine on me, shine on me.

As we gaze on Your kingly brightness

So our faces display Your likeness.

Ever changing from glory to glory,

Mirrored here may our lives tell Your story.

Shine on me, shine on me.

A time for reflection and confession:

Leader:        In baptism we died with Christ,

                   So that as Christ was raised from the dead,

                   We might walk in newness of life.

                   Let us receive new life in him

                   As we confess our sin in penitence and faith

c f Romans  6:4

All:              Like Mary at the empty tomb,

                   We fail to grasp the wonder of your presence.

Leader:        Lord, have mercy;

All:             Christ, have mercy.

All:              Like the disciples behind locked doors,

                   We are afraid to be seen as your followers.

Leader:        Lord, have mercy;

All:             Christ, have mercy.

All:              Like Thomas in the upper room,

                   We are slow to believe.

Leader:        Lord, have mercy;

All:             Christ, have mercy.

Leader:        May the God of love and power

                   Forgive you and free you from your sins,

                   Heal and strengthen you by his Spirit,

                   And raise you to new life in Christ our Lord.

                   Amen.

Collect Prayer:

                   Risen Christ,

                   You filled your disciples with boldness and fresh hope:

                   Strengthen us also to proclaim your risen life

                   And fill us with your peace,

                   To the glory of God the Father.

                   Amen.

Reading :             Acts 3:12-19   © NRSV

12 When Peter saw it, he addressed the people, ‘You Israelites, why do you wonder at this, or why do you stare at us, as though by our own power or piety we had made him walk? 13 The God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob, the God of our ancestors has glorified his servant Jesus, whom you handed over and rejected in the presence of Pilate, though he had decided to release him. 14 But you rejected the Holy and Righteous One and asked to have a murderer given to you, 15 and you killed the Author of life, whom God raised from the dead. To this we are witnesses. 16 And by faith in his name, his name itself has made this man strong, whom you see and know; and the faith that is through Jesus has given him this perfect health in the presence of all of you.

17 ‘And now, friends, I know that you acted in ignorance, as did also your rulers. 18 In this way God fulfilled what he had foretold through all the prophets, that his Messiah would suffer. 19 Repent therefore, and turn to God so that your sins may be wiped out, 20 so that times of refreshing may come from the presence of the Lord, and that he may send the Messiah appointed for you, that is, Jesus, 21 who must remain in heaven until the time of universal restoration that God announced long ago through his holy prophets.

HYMN:      681   Such love

Such love, pure as the whitest snow;

Such love, weeps for the shame I know;

Such love, paying the debt I owe;

O Jesus, such love.

Such love, stilling my restlessness;

Such love, filling my emptiness;

Such love, showing me holiness;

O Jesus, such love.

Such love, springs from eternity;

Such love, streaming through history;

Such love, fountain of life to me;

O Jesus, such love.

Gospel Acclamation:

Alleluia, alleluia,

Jesus said, ‘I am the resurrection and the life’.

Those who believe in me, even though they die, will live,

And everyone who lives and believes in me will never die.’

Alleluia.                                                                                  John 11: 25-26

Jesus Appears to His Disciples

36 While they were talking about this, Jesus himself stood among them and said to them, ‘Peace be with you.’ 37 They were startled and terrified, and thought that they were seeing a ghost. 38 He said to them, ‘Why are you frightened, and why do doubts arise in your hearts? 39 Look at my hands and my feet; see that it is I myself. Touch me and see; for a ghost does not have flesh and bones as you see that I have.’ 40 And when he had said this, he showed them his hands and his feet. 41 While in their joy they were disbelieving and still wondering, he said to them, ‘Have you anything here to eat?’ 42 They gave him a piece of broiled fish, 43 and he took it and ate in their presence.

44 Then he said to them, ‘These are my words that I spoke to you while I was still with you—that everything written about me in the law of Moses, the prophets, and the psalms must be fulfilled.’ 45 Then he opened their minds to understand the scriptures, 46 and he said to them, ‘Thus it is written, that the Messiah is to suffer and to rise from the dead on the third day, 47 and that repentance and forgiveness of sins is to be proclaimed in his name to all nations, beginning from Jerusalem. 48 You are witnesses of these things. 49 And see, I am sending upon you what my Father promised; so stay here in the city until you have been clothed with power from on high.’

The Ascension of Jesus

50 Then he led them out as far as Bethany, and, lifting up his hands, he blessed them. 51 While he was blessing them, he withdrew from them and was carried up into heaven. 52 And they worshipped him, and[f] returned to Jerusalem with great joy; 53 and they were continually in the temple blessing God.

Sermon

Let us pray….

Affirmation of faith

All:             We believe in God above us,

                   Maker and sustainer of all life,

                   Of sun and moon,

                   Of male and female.

                   We believe in God beside us,

                   Jesus Christ, the Word made flesh,

                   Born of a woman, servant of the poor,

                   Tortured and nailed to a tree.

                   A man of sorrows, he died forsaken.

                    He descended into the earth

                   To the place of death.

                   On the third day he rose from the tomb.

                   He ascended into heaven

                   To be everywhere present,

                   And his kingdom will come on earth.

                   We believe in God within us,

                   The Holy Spirit of Pentecostal fire,

                   Life-giving breath of the church,

                   Spirit of healing and forgiveness,

                   Source of resurrection and of eternal life.

                   Amen.

Now let us pray together

INTERCESSIONS (end with Lord’s Prayer) led by Pat and Tony Ferris

We say the Lord’s Prayer together

                   Our Father in heaven,

                   Hallowed be your name,

                   Your kingdom come,

                   Your will be done on earth as it is in heaven,

                   Give us today our daily bread,

                   Forgive us our sins,

                   As we forgive those who sin against us,

                   Save us in the time of trial

                   And deliver us from evil,

                   For the kingdom, the power and the glory are yours,

                   Now and forever. Amen.

Ending:

Leader:        This is love, not that we loved God,

All:             but that he loved us and sent his son.

                   He is the sacrifice for our sins,

All:             that we might live through him.

                   If God loves us so much

All:             We ought to love one another.

                   If we love one another,

All:             God lives in us.

cf 1 John 4: 12

Blessing:

                   May Christ,

                   Who out of defeat brings new hope and a new future,

                   Fill you with his new life;

                   And the blessing of God almighty,

                   The Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit,

                   Be with you and remain with you always, Amen.

All:    We go into the world to walk in God’s light,

          To rejoice in God’s love and to reflect God’s glory. Amen.

Final hymn………………

HYMN: 66      Be thou my vision

Be Thou my Vision, O Lord of my heart
Naught be all else to me, save that Thou art
Thou my best thought, by day or by night
Waking or sleeping, Thy presence my light

Be Thou my Wisdom, be Thou my true Word
I ever with Thee and Thou with me, Lord
Thou my great Father and I Thy true son
Thou in me dwelling and I with Thee one

Be thou my battle-shield, sword for a fight
Be thou my dignity, Thou my delight
Thou my soul's shelter and Thou my high tower
Raise Thou me heavenward, O Power of my power

Riches I heed not, nor man's empty praise
Thou my inheritance, now and always
Thou and Thou only, the first in my heart
High King of heaven, my Treasure Thou art

High King of heaven, after victory won
May I reach heaven's joys, O bright heaven's Sun
Heart of my own heart, whatever befall
Still be my Vision, O Ruler of all

Be Thou my Vision, O Lord of my heart
Naught be all else to me, save that Thou art
Thou my best thought, by day or by night
Waking or sleeping, Thy presence my light
